Year 11 pupil Matthew Alred sailed in this year’s Topper World Championships in France. Sailing in the five day event, Matthew got off to a great start thanks to an exciting opening ceremony in Brittany. Matthew began racing five years ago and to achieve the right to sail with the Bronze fleet after such a short length of time is an amazing accomplishment. Matthew competed in three races per day, the majority going well, he made some great progress. One race didn’t quite go to plan when his mainsheet came undone; this meant Matthew was whiskied out of that particular race but he remained confident and carried on working hard to recover.

Matthew said: “After a week of sailing I was so tired but I loved every moment. I was extremely happy with some of my results and I achieved most of my goals. Unfortunately I didn’t get into silver fleet but I am very happy with my position in bronze fleet. I’m looking forward to competing again very soon.”
